JEFFERSON CITY — Getting a massage can seem like a luxury to many, but for expectant mothers, it comes with important health benefits for both mom and baby.

It’s soothing, and relaxing, but to Rachel Steinmeier, a prenatal massage is a necessity.

“Prenatal massage is not just a treat,” she said. “It’s very important for your health, for the health of your child.”

Rachel has been a massage therapist for 10 years, and she has extensive training in prenatal massage. She said soon-to-be moms who get a massage will experience benefits with their circulation.

“Including blood flow and your lymph system, which is very important when you’re pregnant,” she said. “It keeps you fighting disease, virus, and infection.”

She said massage therapists offer several different types of prenatal massages, but to her the most effective form.

“A side position, where you’re both with a full body pillow, or a few pillows,” she said. “I not only get to know that I’m helping someone through a potentially difficult time, but I get to hear their story and learn about their children, and why they’re naming them what they’re naming them and it’s neat for me to get a little background to who they are.”

Rachel said any woman who is considered a high-risk pregnancy should consult their doctor before scheduling a prenatal massage.
